Running in the woods

This past year has felt like it lasted ten years, literally. As we are nearing the end of 2020, I thought it would be fun to reflect on one of the constants in my life, running, and what it has taught me this year. I am in no way saying that 2021 is going to be perfect and all of our challenges are going to just poof away. BUT I do have hope that things will change for the better, and what I’ve learned about myself and running during this time will stick with me for years to come. So here are the lessons I’ve learned from running in 2020.

I am Grateful to Have Running in my Life

This is something I think about constantly, but 2020 has really made me appreciate running. When gyms closed down, and everything got crazy, I was able to find an isolated area where I could still get my miles in safely. Running is such a great, accessible form of exercise and stress relief. Having the ability to keep doing it as part of my daily routine was huge for my mental and physical health. I feel lucky to have a passion for running and a strong desire to keep running regardless of what is going on around me.

Switch Things Up When Needed

For obvious reasons, my routine had to change when the pandemic hit. You can read about that HERE. Being flexible is something I tend to struggle with, and this past year has helped me grow a bit in that area.

Switching things up can also help when you get bored or need some running inspiration. New shoes and gear always get me excited about running. This year I got my Aeroplex headphones, and I love them! Trying a new running trail or running a new neighborhood can also add excitement to your routine! This year we explored new trails in our area and I look forward to more exploration in the future!

Virtual Runs are a Fun Alternative to In-Person Races

This year sort of forced my hand into trying Virtual runs/ races, and I’m glad it did! I’d been curious to try them, but could never fully commit. Once in-person racing was canceled, virtual runs were my only racing outlet. I tried several this year and really enjoyed my experiences! My favorite race was the half marathon I ran in the Spring. If I wasn’t pregnant right now, I would probably be running more of those long-distance virtual races!

Don’t Let Race Cancellations Stop Your Training

Continuing with the previous point, just because my race was canceled last spring, I did not stop my training for the half marathon. Because of this commitment, I was able to run a virtual half marathon and had a great time! Read all about that race HERE. This year I learned that things may happen to disrupt your plans, but completely abandoning your goal will not make you happy. Since I was able to continue training using my Garmin Coach app, I was able to do my race virtually and still feel proud of my accomplishment!

Appreciate Everything, You Never Know What Can Happen in the Future

It may feel like a million years ago, but I DID run two in-person races this year! My Walt Disney World Marathon and Hot Chocolate 15k were both amazing races and I had so much fun running them. I’ve often reminisced about those races and how much I thoroughly enjoyed each experience. Not being able to run any in-person races recently has made me realize how much I appreciate them and how special each race is.

Never Stop Making Plans and Having Goals

Though I am grateful for everything I have learned this year, I also keep my spirits up by thinking of the future. 2020 has taught me to be patient and realize that just because it can’t happen right now, doesn’t mean it will never happen. I still have plenty of future race goals (see those HERE), and by having these goals I always have something to strive for. By making plans and thinking of the next thing, I stay motivated to “just keep running”! =)

What has this past year taught you about running? It’s been a weird year, and we’re not off the rollercoaster yet, but thinking positively and keeping hope for the future will surely give 2021 a good start! Have a safe and Happy New Year! ❤

  1. I just started running this year! And I so agree with these- even with the virtual changes it’s still fun to challenge yourself!

  2. I agree with all of this!! I’ve been trying to run more but never thought about entering virtual events – such a good tip!

  3. That’s incredible! Congrats on your running journey. I am not much of a runner and can only go about 5 minutes on the treadmill, but I admire everyone who runs long-distance.
