When I first started running I wanted to sign up for a 10k, but could never commit to actually DOING it. It was years later that I decided to go all-in and sign up for a half marathon and a training group specifically for half marathons. Maybe if I’d known all the benefits I do now I would have started my racing career years before my first half. There are so many reasons to run races! It doesn’t matter if you choose a virtual or in-person event, running races makes an amazing hobby (and slight addiction for some 😉 ), so check out my list of 9 legit reasons to run a race!
1. Motivation to Push Yourself
Running can easily get stale. Without a carrot at the end of the stick, it’s easy to just give up or fall into a comfortable routine. With a goal race in mind, you can push your limits so you enjoy yourself come race day. Without a goal race I would never run the workouts I do now while training for a half marathon. They are TOUGH, but I know they will make me stronger in the end!
2. Medals
Do it for the BLING! This might seem like a silly reason to run races, but some of those medals are AWESOME. Also, there is no better feeling than walking around wearing your medal all day, knowing you accomplished something special.
3. Training Program
This goes hand in hand with the motivation aspect, but choosing a training program is a great way to keep you strong for your race. I only commit to training programs when I have a goal race in mind. I just cannot find the motivation without a goal. Training programs are a fantastic way to make you stronger as a runner!
4. Support – Running Community
Races are an AMAZING way to connect with the running community! When you run a race, there are always tons of folks cheering you on and encouraging you. Even virtual races have pages and groups you can join to help encourage you while you train and race. I remember the first time I ran a race I fell in love with the feeling of being with “my people” as we all ran together. Runners are positive, supportive people who love to see others reaching their goals. It is sure to bring a smile to your face!
5. Seeing New Places
It is so fun to see where each race takes you (or where you decide to run if you choose a virtual race). Even local races will take you down streets you might not run on your own. I’ve run some beautiful race courses (St. George Marathon was a favorite!), so choosing a race with breathtaking beauty is another reason to run a race! Heck, runDisney races sometimes go backstage in the parks which is always a treat to see!
6. Support Charities
Many races support fantastic charities with your race registration. This can be a wonderful reason to choose a race, or even fundraise for a race! Find something that resonates with you and you’ll feel even better about supporting the cause.
7. Sense of Accomplishment
This might seem like a given, but finishing a race is something to be so proud of. After months of training and long hours of running, crossing that finish line gives you a sense of accomplishment like no other. You will be floating on air after you are handed that medal, it’s an incredible feeling. And you absolutely deserve that celebration cupcake! =D
8. Being Part of Something Bigger than Yourself
This was a huge motivator for me when I ran my first marathon. One of our coaches gave a speech before I ran and he mentioned marathons as being something bigger than you. When you are in the race corrals you can feel the buzzing energy from all the racers. It’s a community coming together to accomplish something that not many people attempt. It really is magical.
9. Motivate Others
You never know who’s watching you accomplish your goals. Your motivation can be the spark that ignites something in someone else!
