While we have yet to see a runDisney in-person race on the calendar, there have been plenty of virtual options! When the 2021 Princess Half Marathon Weekend turned virtual, I knew I had to get in on that sweet Princess swag. It was also fortunate for me since I knew I’d be just entering my third trimester of pregnancy, so a virtual race made it so I knew I could complete my miles in whatever way I was able! I decided to go with the 10K option since it was Rapunzel-themed, and a 10K seemed like a more approachable distance than the half marathon. Registration
Registration for the Virtual option opened up in September 2020. As soon as I heard this news I knew I had to sign up! As per usual, runDisney races are EXPENSIVE. They offered several options to include just the medal or medal and shirt. I decided to go all-in with the medal plus shirt option! runDisney has a portal of all your race registrations so it’s easy to see what you’ve registered for and update any information from there. All in all, it was an easy experience.
Race
Early on in my pregnancy, when I signed up for the race, I had hope of completing the 10K in our neighborhood. Cut to many months later and 28 weeks pregnant… running outside wasn’t really working for me anymore. Luckily we had just gotten a treadmill with the iFit training program (read my treadmill review HERE)! I was able to hop on my treadmill and complete two 5Ks with iFit to make my virtual Disney Princess Enchanted 10k race dreams come true!
Running the two 5Ks back to back truly felt like a challenge to me as I had only been doing 3 or 4 mile runs max at that point. It felt really wonderful to have a running goal and complete it, even with my limited running during my pregnancy. Plus, I was able to stop for a bathroom break mid-race, that’s a total win for this preggo runner!
Swag
Let’s be honest, we do these virtual races for the SWAG! I received my medal and race shirt a few weeks after the official “race weekend”. I ran my race a few weeks before that, so I was really excited when these finally came in the mail! The box it was delivered in was HUGE, like the size of a pizza box! It was really fun to open and I think I’m going to frame the top of the box and hang it in my office since it’s just too cute to throw away. =)
The medal is adorable with Rapunzel and the signature lanterns from Tangled. I ordered the shirt a size up from my normal runDisney size since I feel they usually run fitted, and I wanted to be able to wear it post-baby. Well… apparently this year they made their shirts bigger than I had expected, so I can even wear it pre-baby! It should be a good very loose top for my runs during these final weeks and when I get back into running later after he’s born. I love the color and design, overall some really quality swag!
Conclusion
Along with the sweet swag, you can also download mile markers and start/finish signs to make your race feel even more special. There was a finisher certificate and a virtual goodie bag. runDisney emails you the links to these, but doesn’t bombard you with emails (which is pretty great). I loved seeing all my runDisney friends on Instagram completing their races and celebrating their victories. There is such a community in runDisney and we all support one another. Even when races get canceled and we have to run virtually, everyone comes together to make it a special experience and build each other up, which is what running is all about!
Though the virtual runDisney races are expensive, they are an excellent way to stay motivated and commemorate your achievement even when you aren’t racing in person. I’ve done a few virtual runDisney races now (see my recap of the 5k virtual series HERE), and I believe that the quality of medals and support runDisney gives is second to none. If you love the theme of a race and want that swag, go for it! Though I am very much looking forward to running in person through the parks once things get back to normal (and once my wee one joins the family!). Happy running!
